What Is The Difference Between Hip Hop And Rap?

Recently i was told that there is a difference between hip hop and rap music. I wasn't sure how these people were referring to the music so being curious I enquired about the difference. Apparently hip hop has more music behind it and rap is words and sounds. So now I know there is a difference and that they both have a unique sound separate from each other. While some song genres are hip hop others are in fact rap. The crazy thing is determining which genre a song is sometimes. Like is it hip hop or rap? For the most part that is the only thing that tells them apart and yes, there is a difference between hip hop and rap.
