Oran Peli is a young debutant form Israel, and “Paranormal Activity” is his first movie. He wrote, produced and directed this horror movie, mixing different influences and demonstrating that he is a true admirer of this genre.
Production and preparation of “Paranormal Activity” started two years ago, but it will premiere and start its life (on DVD) this year.
Leading actors Amber Armstrong, Michael Bayouth, Katie Featherston and Randy McDowell, are all newcomers or debutantes without any previous experience, but they are quite convincing, and persuasive in their roles.
Editing is also strong asset of this movie, because it adds to the drama and gives the movie a great tempo and dynamics, which is very important in a horror genre.
Story is a bit of a cliché and if it reminds you of something don’t worry. Plot was never the strongest part of modern horror movies. Young couple, truly in love, moves into a new house. They are an average pleasant couple, middle class, and their new home is settled in a peaceful cozy suburb. Everything seems normal, they have started their independent life in the beautiful neighborhood, they are in love, glad that they’ve made the next step, and moved from their parents. It all looks like a picture perfect scenario.
Now, here comes the disturbing part. Every night they witness some “demonic” force, become disturbed and determined to save themselves from that threat, and find out what is happening. But sometimes, ignorance is bliss. And, they will learn that the hard way.
If you are a fan of horror movies, this one may be interesting to you. Nothing revolutionary lies in “Paranormal Activity” but if you love being scared, give it a try. For a debutant, Oran Peli demonstrated great eye for details, and knowledge of the genre, and we give him highest score for that.
