Me and Orson Walles Review

Richard Linklater is one of the best directors of his generation. Texas born artist started showing first interest in art since a very tender age, and is now (in his forties) one of most productive and beloved directors in “indie” America.

He is equally successful as a director, writer and producer, and his filmography is very colourful and rich. Among great movies that he has signed let’s remember just few: “Slacker”, “Waking Life”, “A Scanner Darkly” (critically acclaimed), “Fast Food nation”, “Before Sunrise” and “Before Sunset” (which brought him Academy Award Nomination, etc.
Richard Linklater started filming “Me and Orson Walles” in 2008, using the novel by Robert Kaplow as the starting point for research and artistic development. He was determined to find the right cast, and his search lasted for more than 6 months before he was truly satisfied with the selection.

Young Ben Chaplin has landed a leading role (we will also see him at the end of the year in “Dorian Gray”). New child superstar (or teenage, I am not sure) – Zac Effron is also one of the leaders in this feature, and Linklater friend and muse Claire Danes is making a comeback to the A-list in this movie, as Sonja Jones.

The story starts in NY in a theatre, where a young student gets a chance to play in “Julius Caesar”, in Mercury theatre (in the year 1937.), in a production developed, organised and directed by young Mr. Walles – genial student, aged 22.

The movie follows Zac Effron as a nubie in the theatrical world, his falling in love with the scene, with the theatre, and a lovely girl he co-stars with; and on the other side, silent artist Orson Walles whom you will love, envy, and pitty at one point.

Brilliant director and his latest masterpiece. Don’t miss it!
