Good hair is a documentary by the famous comedian and social commentator Chris Rock. His six years old daughter inspired him to make this documentary when one day she returned home tensed about not having good hair. For those who do not know the term good hair; it is the straight, long, wavy or loosely curled hair that is easily comb-able. It is a term used by the black community. Chris did a deep research that included the interviews of famous entertainers, teachers, secretaries, scientists and many other professionals on having good hair. It revealed that women in particular go to severe lengths to get those ‘good hair’.
Many people believed that people with good hair have better job opportunities and even better sex lives. The movie in a funny and real way portrays this truth. Underneath the funny and smart commentary by Rock, is a strong and solid research about various racists’ attitudes towards physical appearances. Film at certain points is touching and emotional when you see tiny tots of only two or three going through a process of hair straightening. Chris Rock as always has beautifully played the character and his daughters are also as adorable. There is a wide range of characters that Rock has included in the movie which contains interactions and interviews with the celebrities like Ice-T, Eve, Nia Long, and also the hair product manufacturers, the stylists and many more.
The director Jeff Stilson well supports the humor of the movie and at certain points the documentary also feels like a stand up routine. But, the deep and solid research and also the inclusion of a wide range of characters varying from celebrities and the street person and their views about good hair establish different perspectives and justify the theme of the documentary. There are many entertaining wild shows of fair that display a fair camera work.
