They came To Play will be released in August of 2010. It is being released by Area 23a. It is a documentary. A multi award winning and uplifting feature length documentary about the international piano competition for Outstanding Amateurs, hosted by the Van Cliburn Foundation.
Top amateur pianists from all over the world, ranging from self taught to classically trained, aged thirty five to almost eighty. In Fort Worth, Texas for a week of competition, music and making new friends.
Entertaining and inspiring the They came To Play documentary provides an inside and intimate look into the lives of these colorful, competitors as they try to balance the art and work and family, with their love for music too. Being dedicated enough to be in front of judges for three elimination rounds.
All of the They came To Play film’s heroes have made their careers outside of music fields ranging in medicine to business, and yet still make time for doing something they love to do, and that is playing the piano. For some competitors they have faced tough challenges and still continue on in the competition. Those who have had addictions and yet overcame them and also play for the judges. Commentary from noted American pianist Cliburn and gold medalists from the foundation’s professional competition, along with outstanding performances they all meet together for one time of showing what they can do.
