Out of the top twelve films that hit the box offices this weekend George Clooney and the American are in first place. And it is no surprise. This is a movie that movie goers have been wanting to go see. It was a slow Labor Day weekend at the movies as the fears of hurricanes hitting the East coast ending up petering away to nothing by Friday night. Still, it was not one of the best weekends for movies with only one movie grossing fifteen million over the four day weekend. That movie was the suspense thriller the American which opened on Wednesday in over two thousand theaters.
Academy winner George Clooney starred in the movie in the title role of the action packed and hard hitting thriller. As an assassin, he is constantly on the move and always alone. After a job in Sweden ends more harshly than expected for this American abroad, he retreats to the Italian countryside. He relishes being away from death for awhile as he stays in a small medieval town. However, while he is there he takes an assignment to construct a weapon for a mysterious contact. Savoring the peaceful and quiet surroundings he finds the mountains of Abruzzo. He also accepts the friendship of a local priest and pursues a beautiful woman. Their time together evolves into a romance and one seemingly free of danger. But by stepping out of the shadows he might be tempting fate. This is a movie that will essentially keep you in suspense and wondering what is going to happen next.
