The cult director Roman Polanski, who has recently faced the odious task of defending himself against a child sex abuse claim, has recently been dealt a devastating blow by the judiciary after his attempts to have the allegations against him dismissed were rejected. Showing that justice is not blind and that none can escape the long arm of the law, these charges that are hanging over Polanski’s head have been outstanding for some 32 years!
In 1978, after Polanski admitted his guilt but before sentencing could be carried out, he took the bold and somewhat foolish move of fleeing the country and seeking refuge in Europe. His desperate gamble ultimately failed and the authorities were quick to catch up with him. He is now currently under house arrest in Switzerland, being watched under the baleful eye of the Swiss authorities.
It would seem that Polanski was relying upon another gamble although this time, and it was in reliance of the law as opposed in rejection of it. The rejection of the appeal against the original conviction will come as a significant blow to the director, although his final fate will be determined by the Swiss authorities. Those authorities will have to make the judgment call as to whether to honor the terms of the extradition request.
