The bassist for the group Weezer died in a Chicago hotel room police said Sunday. A spokesperson in Chicago said Welsh was supposed to check out of the hotel around one on Saturday. When he didn’t, the hotel staff went to his room and found him unconscious and not breathing.
The cook county medical examiner’s office said autopsy results will be available on Sunday afternoon. There was nothing to make one think there was any type of foul play.
Mikey Welsh, 40, of Burlington, VT. performed with Weezer from 1998 to 2001, leaving after suffering a nervous breakdown, according to the band’s web site. He eventually established himself in a second career as a painter. Mikey told sources he was taking a break from music.and he really feels he needed to reinvent himself and move on. He can’t be happier painting. Music is still an important part of his life, but he didn’t really have the desire to play it. Weezer posted a message on its website, saying that Mikey ‘s time with the band was important, amazing, and awesome.
He had a unique talent and was a loving friend and father. A great artist is gone but he won’t be forgotten.
