Dixie Carter passed away on Saturday morning at the age of 70. Her husband, Actor, Hal Holbrook said in a statement, “This has been a terrible blow to our family. We would appreciate everyone understanding that this is a private family tragedy.”
Carter died from complications due to endometrial cancer. Dixie and Hall married in 1984. They appeared together in the film That Evening Sun in 2009.
Dixie Carter is best known for her role as Julia Sugarbaker in Designing Women which aired from 1986-1993. Dixie was nominated for the Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for her role as Gloria Hodge in Desperate Housewives. The award went to Elaine Stritch for her role as Colleen Donaghy in Hiatus.
In 1960, Carter made her professional stage debut in Carousel. She took eight years off. She appeared for two years on the soap opera The Edge of Night as an assistant District Attorney.
She appeared in the series Out of the Blue, On Our Own, Different Strokes and Filthy Rich.
From 1999-2002 Dixie played lawyer Randi King on Family Law.
Dixie has two daughters from her first marriage: Mary Dixie and Ginna. She was married three times but only had children from her first marriage.
