According to sources San Diego will remain home to Comic Con for the next five years. The city officials and the company that puts on the huge pop culture event will announce a five year contract Friday morning. There are other sources that the contracts that Comic Con negotiated for discounted hotel rates through the next five years were key to their decision as well.
Other cities that tried to get the company with offers of cheap hotel rooms and convention space included Los Angeles and another city. Its never been a secret that they had hoped to stay in San Diego, but the real challenge was that those who want to attend the event can afford to attend, in terms of size and space and cost, said reports from the Comic Con event.
Comic Con started in San Diego in 1970. The event showcasing upcoming movies, television shows and video games has grown tremendously and ow has around one hundred and thirty thousand fans and delivers an estimated $163 million dollars to the city each year. Rival cities have tried to capitalize on the convention organizers concerns that they had outgrown San Diego’s smaller convention center. San Diego countered by offering organizers one hundred thousand dollars per year in hotel tax revenue.
The city’s tourism marketing district said worldwide publicity from the event literally helps the market and San Diego as a tourist destination for this event. And, there are a lot of people who attend this event each year. To move it to another city would be also a great challenge to those individuals who make it a yearly event. Everyone is so used to calling San Diego its home. It has been for the last forty years or so.
